I've seen all of New Amsterdam now, and I'm alternately mopey, pissed, and in denial about the fact that there isn't going to be any more of it. Ever.

Now I know how fans of Firefly who came upon the show years later must feel. In fact… this is even worse. A new Firefly fan in 2012 stumbles over the show, watches all of it, falls in love with the characters and the writing and the world, and then, if they want to, they can immediately start participating in a very active, cheerful, prolific fandom that was so vocal it got a movie and still has all kinds of events and fan meetups all over the place. All I've got are a couple of inactive lj communities, a message board that hasn't had any new threads for four years or new posts for one, and a couple of fanfics scattered about the internet. This is even marginally true for shows like… say… Xena, or Magnificent Seven, or Robin Hood. Off the air? Yes. Forgotten? Not even a little bit.

So… this is my first time floundering around in a truly tiny forgotten fandom.

I've poked around on the communities and message boards I've found a bit, feeling a bit like a hiker who's stumbled onto a ghost town. "Oh look… here are messages from back when the show was airing and people were obsessing over ratings." "And… there are the posts about sending things to FOX in a save-our-show campaign. Postcards with vintage pictures on them, huh? That's… a really cool idea, guys." *sniffle* I wish I could have been there with you squeezing over naked swimming and how awesome Eva is and bouncing theories around about how exactly his immortality works… I'd throw in my two cents, but I don't think there would be anyone around to hear them fall.

There are the occasional drabbles and lj icon sets, though there are not nearly enough of them. I'm still looking for a general one that I really like that isn't from the scene where he cheats on Samantha because while DAMN that was a fine scene, that's not what I want representing him in my lj icon roll. For now, I settled on the YAY! BABY! shot from the episode with Lilly because it is absolutely adorable, and the unadulterated joy on his face in this scene gave me happy warm fuzzy feelings. (I'll learn episode names eventually, but I'm not quite there yet.)

For future references (because I will be writing and posting fic), here's what I found.

[livejournal.com profile] newamsterdamfic seems to be open for posting, though no one has for going on three years now.

[livejournal.com profile] na_secrets seems to be a general discussion community that hasn't had a new post since 2008.

The New Amsterdam forums over at a place called the Blue Whale Pub. I gather that these were once the official FOX forums, and they got moved? Kind of hard to tell, but oh ye gods there's a post from Nikolaj over there where he's amazingly nice and sweet and adorable and generous to fans of the show and I need to stop actor crushing on him before this gets as bad as my Richard Armitage obsession. *ahem* My apologies. I'll try to keep that from happening again, but no promises.

[livejournal.com profile] amsterdam_eva is... what it says on the box. A John/Eva comm with very little in it. I... don't think I ship this. But I love their partnership, and I might read what's there out of curiosity. (R. already found and had me read a Buffy crossover... and at this point, I'm open to just about anything.)

[livejournal.com profile] _tayler has some really cute icons here, which is where I picked up the one I put in my lj collection. (Someday I'll get more DW icons... but not today.)

And finally, there's the Wikipedia page for the show, which is quite comprehensive and helpful when I'm looking for timeline information. Mostly in the form of "Do I get to fill in what John was doing in (insert year here) or do we already know that?" Anyway... nice resource.

I've got a couple of half-finished short fics lounging about on my hard drive now. Need to go see if AO3 has a category. Need to join nearly defunct communities. Need to go back to the beginning and watch entire series with a fine-tooth comb.

The one upside of all of this, I suppose, is that because the show got canceled, NC-W was free to play Jaime Lannister and didn't have any long term commitments when the GoT casting people started looking. This was indeed fortuitous, because I adore his insights about and portrayal of Jaime down to the depths of my soul. It just makes me a little sad that the price we paid for Nikolaj!Jaime was another show and character I've come to love.
