Rae and I watched the series opener of Downton Abbey tonight.   A re-enactment of my real-time reaction is as follows:

On Bates/Anna:

OMG!1!! Bates/Anna kiss! They are the most sickeningly adorable thing in the entire universe and they deserve to be happy and I am so squishily happy for them I could just die...

Oh wait.  Bates' wife is here. With the chatty new girl. This can't be good.

I HATE MRS. BATES.  (At this point, I may or may not have applied an epithet I usually reserve for Cersei Lannister.  Those of you who watch GoT with me know what it is.  I won't write it here, because it really is horrid.)

Nooooo...  Bates! Don't go!  I know you're preserving the family honor and all that, but now Anna is crying, and I'm close to crying... *sniffle*

On Matthew and Mary:

Ohhhh boy. Another honorable Brit in a military uniform with a voice that sounds startlingly like Jack Davenport's.  I'm done for. I found him somewhat handsome the first series.  He's one of the best looking things on the show now.

Oh, Mary... I'm so sorry you didn't snap him up while he had the chance.  You obviously still care for him, stiff upper lip aside. That scene at the train station had me a bit wibbly.

In my head-canon, the inside of Matthew's brain is doing the following: "Two years... that's a long time, right?  I should be all right, right?  Well... I AM all right!  Look at how all right I am!  I'm so all right I'm engaged!  See? Just fine."

On Sybil and Branson:

I shipped this.  Even when it was just a few fans thinking it was a good idea.  So my reaction was:

OH MY GOSH IT'S ABOUT TO BE CAN.... no it's not.  *Kicks table leg* *mutters about how it's a perfectly understandable reaction for a woman of her time and class* *sulks*

And now that we've got the obligatory shipping reactions out of the way...

I really enjoyed this episode.  The characters continue to be complex, not always likable, but always believable. I adore Maggie Smith's dowager duchess, thoughtless entitlement and all, and I take an unseemly amount of pleasure at sniping cattily at Edith when she's on screen and being snide herself. (I went back and forth about who was more awful to the other last series, Edith or Mary, but tonight I came down firmly on Mary's side, I think.)

The depiction of the effects of the war on the house and the village and the various ways people deal with it was unsettlingly real.  We have people who want to go to the front and can't, like Lord Grantham, people who decidedly don't want to go to the front and are willing to lie and risk being called out as a coward for it, and both of these are played with this really nuanced delicacy that's just amazing.

And this show gets an average of ten million watchers a week in Britain.  The only American show to even begin to approach that number is American Idol.

Guys... I'm living in the wrong country. And also, is it next week yet?

And, as advertised in the title, a meme that I borrowed from [personal profile] cassiopaya and [profile] sheebeen.

Give me a pairing and I'll answer the following. If it so moves you, give me a few pairs.

1.) What they most commonly do during sex (if they are the sexing type)
2.) Who has prettier (or just more attractive) hair
3.) What they argue about most often
4.) Who'd cope best if the other one died
5.) The happiest plausible happily-ever-after I can think of for them
6.) The most tragic possible ending for them
7.) What I enjoy most about their dynamic
8.) What I find difficult to write about them

Most of my fanfics are linked in my memories if you want to know what I write.  And even if I don't have anything posted for it... if I ship it, I've thought about these questions. Believe me. Just ask.
