So, I realized I hadn't posted about anything that wasn't Robin Hood or fandom for a while now. What's been going on with me, you ask?
My last final was on Monday, and I have a break until the 22nd of June. I've been loving it. I still have a bit of grading to finish up, but I still have lots of time to do things that usually get shoved to the outer reaches of my schedule. I've been cooking a lot, for one thing. I like the feeling of making a plan, rounding up ingredients, and puttering around in the kitchen until I have something edible that the rest of the house can also eat. The atmosphere in the house is generally family-like, but I really feel it when I cook for everyone. Tonight, it's chicken and potatoes in yellow Thai curry (from a TJ's bottle... I'm not that ambitious) and some sort of rice dish that Rae picked out that required us to buy a bottle of white wine. Should be fun.
I've been getting back into the swing of writing regularly. It's fanfic, but it's writing. There are some smaller things in the works, but mostly I've been hit on the head with an epic Robin Hood idea that won't go away. I'm thinking about doing it for
bigbanghood when it gets off the ground.
Rae and I went to a Cajun festival a couple of weeks ago. That's right... sleepy little white-bread Simi Valley (which I love, by the way...) has a Cajun Festival. It was fantastic. There were two big stages with all kinds of music, and the food... oh... the food. I had a personal-sized fresh-baked peach cobbler, and a sandwich made with something being advertised as Carolina pulled pork... might as well have called it The Most Awesome Sandwich Ever. It was FANTASTIC.
I start to teach summer school on the 22nd. It's an English 21 class, which I've never done in the summer before, but at this point, I'm glad to have the work at all, so I'm not complaining. I need to write my syllabus next week... Other than that, I'm fairly prepared this time around. It's a good thing I got to the bookstore before Spring semester ended, because I think my book is already in stock. It's nice to be able to tell the students who are writing me asking what they need that it's already there.
I've been watching the new Burn Notice season. Love it. SO MUCH LOVE for this show and for Michael and Fi and Sam and the brilliant continuity and character building... As much as I love RH, it's nice to be able to watch a show and not make excuses for it for a change. (After last night's episode I was giddily running around the house in awe of things like the more-than-competent use of previously established canon and character traits.) Also, I've seen the first two episodes of Royal Pains now, and it's pretty fun. Snappy writing, interesting characters... I usually can't stand shows that center around how very rich the rich are, but this seems to be an exception.
Speaking of shows I'm seeing for the first time... I was over with
hystericblue42 after she had her wisdom teeth out, and she showed me the pilot of The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. Guys. GUYS. I... have not been so amused in a long time. Did any of you know about this and not tell me? WHY NOT? It's a Western! I love Westerns! And this one's got UFO's! And incredibly smart, self-aware writing! And Bruce Campbell is uncomfortably attractive! I LOVE IT SO MUCH! Until I'm able to borrow
hystericblue42's copy, I'm making due by introducing Catherine to The Magnificent Seven, which she's never seen. I'd forgotten how very much I love that show, camp, preachiness, and all. Ezra Standish was is one of my first and greatest less-than-squeaky-clean crushes.
Other summer happenings coming up for me include...
Going up to Lake Piru tomorrow with the housemates. It was Kelli's birthday last week, and we wanted to do something just the four of us to celebrate. I've been feeling a need to get outside lately, so it should be fun. I've never been up there.
COMIC CON! Yes, still going this year. Kind of like last year, I don't know what big things I should be excited about, but I'm sure that it will end up being awesome all the same.
Going up to Visalia for another birthday party later this month. Also need to see my parents and wish them both a happy retirement. It's weird that I'm going to be teaching in the fall and they're not.
