OST Countdown Day 4 and 5
May. 17th, 2011 03:20 pmYesterday is officially in the running for my Most Stressful Day Ever. I double booked myself when I agreed to sub a class and do portfolio conferences at one school, completely forgetting that finals at school number two were going to throw off my usual schedule. So, I had to frantically call school number two and ask if someone would please copy my final prompt, pass it out, and sit with my students until I got there. Luckily, someone was available and everything worked out fine, but I still ended up meeting with four different classes, two of which were finals, and grading a TON of assignments very quickly so I could give them back. I had students in my last class waiting for up to half an hour after the final was OVER so they could see their research paper grades and take their papers home. And I found an instance of plagiarism in that last class, and THAT had to be dealt with... So... I missed posting yesterday.
Day 4. What are your hopes for the new film? What are you most looking forward to?
No spoilers here, I don't think, but just in case...
Heh... when I wrote this question, I thought I'd still be in the "looking forward" instead of "looking back" stage... the universe is an odd place.
Before I saw the movie, here's what had me really excited:
MERMAIDS. Oh, how I love mermaids... The Little Mermaid, mermaids in the live action Peter Pan, mermaid stories, mermaid fanart, mermaid sea songs... people buy me mermaid stuff for birthdays and holidays because they know it'll go in a place of honor on my shelf. Mermaids also end up playing a pretty big part in my one and only Peter Pan fic, and I played around with what would happen if Theo and Andrew met them here, so, PotC putting its own spin on mermaids in canon? Especially considering the gorgeous posters they released and the beautiful girl they got to play Syrena? This can't be anything but awesome.
BLACKBEARD. Seriously. The instant I heard about his casting, I was on board. I suspected that if they let Ian McShane be as urbanely, cruelly terrifying as he is in... everything else I've seen him in, but especially Deadwood, that we were going to have a grown up PotC movie on our hands. And the posters of him look AMAZING.
NAVY!!!! From the second that
vanilla_elf posted the pics taken during filming of someone who might be Andrew and someone who was definitely Theo, I've been bouncing off the walls. No matter how much or how little they were in the movie, I knew I would get more of them AT ALL, and after not seeing Andrew since CotBP, that was something to look forward to.
And finally... Jack being himself again. I'd read a lot of interviews with actors and producers that said that this movie felt more like the first one, and knowing that Johnny got script approval did a lot to give me hope in regards to Jack's character. The more I saw in trailers and individual posted scenes, the more I was convinced that THIS was the Jack Sparrow I have loved in the first movie, and I couldn't wait to see what he did that they weren't already showing us.
Day 5. If you could bring one character from the first three movies back for OST, who would you choose? How would you write him or her in?
Well... my obvious choice is James Norrington... Since James died at sea and is personally acquainted with the new ferry man for those who... well... die at sea, I'd have him show up in the Navy again, butting heads with Barbossa with nothing more by way of explanation than that Will Turner let James come back to make up for everything that happened with Elizabeth breaking his heart and letting Jack go free for that one day ultimately cost him his commission and his ship.
I'd also love to see Anamaria back. Especially now that there's another female pirate for her to play off of. Where Angelica looks to be flamboyant, Ana is understated. Where Angelica (even in trailers) flirts with Jack, Ana takes none of his nonsense. I'd love to see Jack try and navigate having both of them around. And... not a spoiler here, but having seen the movie, it would be SO EASY to write her in... Just put her on the Queen Anne's Revenge in the same situation as Jack.
