OST Countdown: Day 2
May. 14th, 2011 01:43 pmFirst of all, I'd just like to say that I've really enjoyed reading people's responses to the questions I asked, both here and at
potc_discussion. It's been fun hearing about the ways that people came into the fandom, and how different characters caught our respective eyes. (I'm glad I'm not the only Norrington fan who didn't notice him much the first time through... it took fandom and fanfic for me to see how awesome he is.)
Day 2. What's a cool/interesting/favorite piece of pirate/navy/PotC stuff you own?
These are some of my most beloved bits of pirates paraphernalia. I got the silver ship pendant at the Tall Ships festival in Dana Point, and the artist that made it told me it was based off of the Lady Washington, the ship that played the Interceptor. I knew when she told me that little piece of information that I would be walking away with one of her pendants. The button is, I think, from a vendor at the Ojai Pirate Faire. It was right after DMC came out, and they had two James quotes in the basket of buttons. I snatched both of them up. I was especially glad to find the "Unique here having the meaning of broken" quote. The bland, deadpan way Jack Davenport delivers that line has me cracking up every time I hear it. (The other one I found has the "My story is the same as your story" quote... but that's depressing. I bought it anyway.) The bit of twine is actually from the Lady, which I had the honor of visiting a couple of years ago. So... there you have it. A silver ship, string from the Interceptor, and a button. Kind of looks like "pieces of whatever I had in my pockets at the time."
My newest acquisition is The Captain Jack Sparrow Handbook. I've collected a lot of PotC books over the years, and when I saw this one at Borders, I doubted that I needed another one, especially one that looked to be teaching kids all about how to be Jack. (Why all the encouraging small children to like Jack Sparrow? That's a terrible idea! ;D) But then I opened it, and I realized that I had made some erroneous assumptions. It is not written for little kids. It's more like a "Worst Case Survival Guide" with PotC flair. Whoever wrote it was obviously a big fan as well as a paid writer, and we end up with quotes like this, from the "How to Escape Being Tied Up" chapter: "When some craven cur finds it amusing to rob you of your manual dexterity, and thus your livelihood, by constraining you at the wrists with hempen rope amid a condescending chuckle of domination -as once happened to Jack Sparrow at the hands of the authorities at Port Royal - don't despair." (I want an icon of Gillette putting Jack in irons with the quote "condescending chuckle of domination" now...) The whole book reads like that--clever, tongue in cheek, and obviously geared toward adult fans of the series.
