Fandom meme I got from [personal profile] lynxgriffin .

Comment to this entry and I'll pick three of your fandoms. Then, update your journal and answer the following questions:

01: What got you into this fandom in the first place?
02: Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
03: Favorite episodes/books/movies/etc.?
04: Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
05: Do you think that more people should get into this fandom?

Pirates of the Caribbean.

1. I was a fan of the movie long before I found the fandom.  I saw it several times in theaters and fangirled over Jack Sparrow like mad.  Then, back in May of 2005, in the middle of writing a paper for my Augustan Lit class, I suddenly decided I would much rather be finding out what kind of PotC fanfic was out there. I found the Black Pearl Sails yahoogroup and some excellent Norrington stuff right off the bat, and I was posting drabbles within a week.

2. Other fandoms will come and go, but PotC will always be my fandom "home base," just as it has been ever since I found it.

3. The Curse of the Black Pearl will always be my favorite.  I am... ambivalent about the second two.  DMC and AWE had their moments, but overall I felt like they failed to capture the charm of the first movie. (And they lack a certain navy lieutenant who is sorely missed.)

4. Do I participate?  *looks at her list of communities, a good fourth of which are PotC related*  Yes.  I write fic on occasion, and I've been known to throw my two cents into discussions if I've got something worthwhile to say.

5. This is an odd question... The PotC fandom is medium sized, I'd say, if one is defining the fandom as "those who actively participate" as opposed to "those who are here for the pretty." (Yes, I'm a bit of an elitist.  I know.)  I'm of the "more the merrier" persuasion when it comes to fandom, but if the "more" are immature fanbrats (of any age), I'm more likely to wish they'd stayed away.  However, it would be fun to see some new, talented fans coming to PotC for the first time.

Robin Hood

1. I actually had to think about how I'd gotten into this fandom.  I'd completely forgotten. According to Wikipedia, the first episode of the series aired in October of 2006.  Rae and I heard about it from some British Doctor Who fans, I think, who were excited about a new version of Robin. I finally got my hands on it in December of 2006, and I'd seen the finale of season one by the January of '07, only a month after it had aired.  So... I've been around pretty much since the beginning. (Funny quote from my old lj post... Here are my original thoughts on Guy after seeing two episodes with him: Sir Guy is walking sex. As has been pointed out, the man is my classic type. Dark hair, pale skin, light eyes, arrogant, with a voice like dark, smooth chocolate. He even seems to have shades of moral ambiguity in these initial episodes. He didn't seem overly thrilled with the Sheriff's cruel approach to justice, and from his conversation with Marian, it sounds as if he's trying to get some family honor back. Some things never change, hmm?

2. Robin Hood is one of those odd instances where I love the fandom much more than I love the canon.  I adore the Robin Hood fandom.  I've met a ton of smart, interesting people who write blazingly intelligent fic, reviews, and meta.  There are so many possibilities left open by the show, and fandom takes good advantage of them.  If the end of season 2 couldn't chase me away, I don't think much else is going to.  I imagine I'll be poking around for a good long while, seeing what's up in Sherwood.

3. Favorite episodes... Series 1: Tattoo, What Tattoo? Series 2: Walkabout. *flails* Series 3: So far, it's got to be "Do You Love Me?" (All three Guy-centric episodes... wonder how that happened.)

4. I participate a LOT, mostly because the series is running right now.  I try to post reviews after every episode, and half of the fun I get from the show is hopping online on a Saturday/Sunday afternoon and seeing what other people had to say, commenting with wild abandon. ;-) I also read fic like there's no tomorrow, and I've written one RH fic so far, and there are several others on the back burner.

5. More people who appreciate a really campy, terribly disappointing show with a lot of potential  and a wonderfully intelligent fandom would be lovely.

Wheel of Time

1. My mom gave me a "sampler" with the first eight chapters of book one when I was in 8th grade.

2.  Though I will alway love the books, I don't know that I would define myself as "in the fandom" at this point.  I belong to a couple of communities, and I'm up on WoT writing news, but that's about it.

3. Of all the books, I think I enjoyed Fires of Heaven the most, for the sheer epic scope of the thing.  Also, I think the Aiel are fascinating, and the Rhuidean arc kind of blew my mind a little.  Character wise, Lan and Nynaeve will always be my favorites, though Birgette, Siuanne, and Leanne are all pretty darn fantastic as well.

4. Once again... define "participate."  The very first time I did an internet search (it was on someone else's computer) it was "Wheel of Time." Back when I first got the internet the summer after I graduated from high school, I was heavily involved in several Wheel of Time RP communities.  In fact, my lj user name, Corrielle, was the name of a character I created for a place called the Grey Tower.  Eventually, I fell out of RP, but I've bought each new book on the day it came out since I started reading them, and I have a silver great serpent ring (like the "magic users" in the books wear) that I wear almost without fail.

5. It's hard to get people into this series.  There are twelve books so far, the original author is dead, and the writer they chose to replace him is following the tradition of writing three books that were supposed to be one.  (Though I'm ok with this for reasons that are too long to go into here.)  It's a vast, sprawling story with hundreds of loose ends. And it's brilliant.  Even when it's slow, even when not much is happening... the sheer scope of the world-building and the complexity of the universe is wonderful.  If that's your thing... read the books.  Even when you're disappointed in them, you'll feel your life is richer for having read them.  I know I do.
