An update before school gets crazy

My class at Ventura started a week ago, and my classes at Mission start a week from tomorrow.  So, before I plunge into the land of "Teaching Three Classes" again, here's what's been up with me lately:

First the "real" stuff...

- Went to my parents' house for the first time since I told them about me and Rae.  It was remarkably calm (perhaps "remarkably" is the wrong word here... my parents are always calm), and almost freakishly normal.  We both went to my Great Aunt Lorraine's birthday breakfast with a whole bunch of family members my mom had to remind me how I was related to, I got to have lunch just me and my mom, and along with [profile] lady_entropy17 and [profile] quinn_merrick, we hung out with [profile] smexy_pocky, [profile] ald_fan_girl, and [profile] angelsbaby0910 at their apartment for quite a long while.   (All I have to say about that is: Disney-princess "I have never" is hilarious.  Especially when certain people play Ariel.)

- Helped a friend of ours pack up her apartment in preparation for a move a couple of weekends ago. It was... typical dusty moving work, but it was good that we went, I think.  It was good to see her again before she moves away from the area, and she directed Rae and me to a delicious Indian restaurant near her apartment that I wish was closer to us.

- I've taken it upon myself to care for the trees and roses in the back yard. We have a pomegranate tree, a lemon tree, a citrus tree of indeterminate type (it's never put out fruit, and only in the past month has it flowered...) and a whole bunch of roses. I learned how to deadhead roses (kind of) and despite my beginning attempts, I think our roses have survived me and are starting to put out new buds again.  This was quite a relief, as I was worried there for a while.

- I've also been swimming a lot. My tolerance for cold water is getting higher, and I feel like I have a lot more energy on days when I swim around actively for a while.  Also, my lung capacity is starting to be more than completely nonexistent.  Hurrah!

- I went to Disneyland with [profile] lady_entropy17, [personal profile] estelofimladris, and [profile] scifichicx for [profile] lady_entropy17's almost-birthday.  There were a ton of people at the park, but we had a good time anyway and ate dinner at Joe's Crab Shack.  (I got to see the birthday girl have her first mudslide... fun times.)

- [profile] smexy_pocky, [profile] ald_fan_girl, and [profile] angelsbaby0910 came down for [profile] lady_entropy17's birthday party on Saturday.  That was a lot of fun... there were lots of people I don't usually get to see at the same place at the same time there, and it was very low-key and chill. (But there was a spectacular Batman cake!)  When it got late, [profile] angelsbaby0910 crashed at our house, which was fun.  I'd been wanting her to see where we live.  In the morning, her room mates came to pick her up, and Rae and I made breakfast for everyone.  It was very domestic and very fun.

- True Blood is fast becoming a necessity on Sunday nights. Jason Stackhouse is officially awesome (and slightly smarter than a post, now... just slightly). Eric is a beautiful sarcastic smartass who I love beyond all reason.  And we're starting to get interesting combinations of people working together... Bill, Sookie, Lafayette, and Lettie Mae all working together to bring Tara back was... intense.  And really sweet. Also, poor Sam... getting stuck with only Jason and Andy Bellefleur for backup?  That's rough. But it worked! Jason Stackhouse pretending to be... whatever it is Mary Anne is trying to summon was priceless and haplessly badass. (Now there are two words I thought I'd never see together...)  And next week... Sam talking to Eric?  That ought to be fun...

- Burn Notice wins my "Most Wonderful Surprising Moment of the Summer" award for the following:

"Fiona is not my past."  *bang*  *bang*

There are very few times I have been so happy to be so surprised. And now I have to wait for January for new episodes. *pouts*

- I'm participating as much as I can in the Robin Hood rewatch that [personal profile] roh_wyn is hosting over at her [personal profile] roh_fics journal. We're watching an episode a week and discussing them as we go. There are even discussion questions for each episode if you're so inclined, and the people participating are all wonderful and insightful. (Just like most of the RH fandom folks I've met!) I watched 1x04, "Parent Hood" with [profile] caedhe yesterday.  It's the one with the baby.  Hard episode for me as a Guy apologist, but I managed.  It's been a lot of fun going back to the beginning, back when the show, you know... set up their big plot points like they had a plan for what was going to happen ahead of time. Back when Will Scarlett said tons with just his eyes and Marian had a brain and usually knew how to use it.  Back when Allan had a personality...  *sigh* For the interested... 1x01 discussion, 1x02 discussion, 1x03 discussion, and finally... 1x04 discussion.  Next week is "Turk Flu" and the appearance of Djaq... I can't wait.

- I'm making headway on my [profile] bigbanghood fic.  I'm a bit behind where I should be on my word count, but as soon as I get a couple of chunks of uninterrupted time, and I'll fix that little problem. I'm having such fun playing with this AU.  I'm not sure how much of the plot I have mapped out I'm going to be able to get done by the deadline (or by the time I reach 30,000 words... though if I reach 30,000 way before the deadline, I'll see how much I think I can realistically add and still leave the story at a good stopping place), and... I don't think it matters. I love this thing so much that I plan on writing big chunks of it until it's finished. I'm just glad to be working on a big project that really has my attention again.
