Day 13

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favourite interview, a book) and explain why you love it so much.

I had to laugh to myself when I read the following explanation of today's prompt: It’s true that being in Fandom occasionally means throwing away the TV show that got Jossed by the end of the third season, the messy sequel to the movie that we fell in love with or the fantasy series with growing questionable plot twists.  Because this is me. In fact, all three of them are me. This is probably obvious to my entire f-list, but I have a love/hate relationship with the canon of my two most beloved fandoms.

[livejournal.com profile] ghettopeach once joked that I had an abusive relationship with Robin Hood after she sat with me during another episode that had me pausing the file to rant every five seconds but still reduced me to tears by the end.  I didn't help my case much when I explained to her, with a wistful look in my eyes, "Yes, Robin Hood may use my soul as a punching bag... it may have killed Marian, and it may have made Guy's hair ridiculous, and it may have so many continuity problems I'm wondering when the Timelords are going to declare the whole thing a temporal disaster, and it may be treating Allan like an automaton, and then there's this Kate girl... but when Robin Hood is good... It's SO good..."

And when I announced to everyone I knew that not only was I excited about the premiere of OST, I was planning on going to the red carpet event and the midnight showing at the El Cap, a lot of people looked at me askance.  "You do remember what this series did to you last time, don't you?" they asked. And I did.  I remembered watching AWE two times in the first 24 hours it was out and crying miserably both times.  In the leadup to OST, my attitude was mostly, "This time around, I'm just going to relax and enjoy Jack's antics and the fact that Theo and Andrew are in the movie at all.  They already killed James.  What more can they do to hurt me?  "  Stupid, stupid question.

So... to counteract all of that, here in no particular order are things I love unabashedly about each of my two longest-running fandom loves.

Pirates of the Caribbean

1. The moment when Jack steps onto the Port Royal docks from his sinking boat.  Completely effortless, utterly self-assured, and perfectly Jack.

2. Elizabeth's stint as a boy!sailor on board the Edinburgh in DMC.  This is the Liz Swann that I love... clever, able to handle herself, and unwilling to wait for someone else to save her (and Will).

3. Gillette knocking a cursed pirate (I think it's Ragetti...) on the head with a piece of tackle from the ship. Andrew is such a clever fellow...

4. James Norrington's entrance in DMC.  I love that we get to hear his voice before we see his face. I love the way that Jack Davenport manages to put so much into those lines, and I love that by the time we see his scruffy, bitter, smile, there are shivers going up my back every time. I may not love what this movie did to James' character, but this is an amazing sequence.

5. Barbossa's explanation of the curse to Elizabeth in his cabin.  I adore Geoffrey Rush's performance here more and more every time I watch CotBP.

6. Every single shot of a ship under full sail. The Interceptor, the Dauntless, the Pearl, the Providence... Every. Single. One.

Robin Hood

1. Robin and Allan's confrontation at the end of "Ducking and Diving."  There's a lot of pain here, but it's so well done and well acted by both of them.

2. The moment when Djaq comforts Allan after the Sheriff unveils Tom's body.  Everything I love about their dynamic is right there.

3. The scene where Guy confronts Marian about being the Nightwatchman in "Treasure of the Nation." Again, this is a scene that gives me heart palpitations it hurts so much to watch, but it is so well acted and intense, and I always felt like after this scene, something should have fundamentally changed about their relationship. It was that epic.

4. Robin and Guy discussing who's going to get arrested at the inn in York. This is a scene that gets under my skin because I'm so upset there weren't more like it.

5. And because I don't fangirl over him much...  the moment in the finale where Archer saves the day by riding into the Sheriff's camp on his big horse, fire-tipped arrows blazing, because his two half brothers need him. (Why yes, I would have watched a fourth season where Archer took up Robin's cause.  Why do you ask?)
