Meme time!
More substantial post regarding recent activities may be forthcoming. Or not. For now... memes!
A while ago,
endcredits tagged me to do the "list seven random things about yourself" meme. So... here they are.
1. I have longish hair. I've always wanted to have hair approximating what one sees on the cover of most high fantasy novels. Long, wavy, and perfect even though there's apparently a light wind making it blow behind the heroine in an epic fashion. Indeed, my hair is about three inches above my waist at its longest point, and this is despite the fact that I chopped it to just below my shoulders a few years ago in an attempt to make it more second-movie-James-Norrington length. However, I almost never wear it down in public. This is because my hair only looks good down for about the first thirty seconds after I brush it. It's extraordinarily light and insubstantial, and the slightest movement on my part of puff of air from the AC vents makes it look like a bird's nest. So, I usually braid it and pretend I'm Nynaeve from WoT, tie it back in a pony tail, or, more recently, put it up in these neat figure-eight clips that manage to hold all of my hair up all day without slipping out or getting loose.
2. In the last few years, I have done a lot of in-character stuff - structured RP, crazy online discussions, the ever-popular "in character drinking game," various themed parties, and in an overwhelming number of circumstances, I have played male characters. If someone says, "hey, get a hold of one of your characters for a multi-fandom game," the ones I reach for first are all guys. (James and Theo from PotC, Allan from RH, Bones McCoy, and Mat Cauthon from WoT are my current frontrunners...) I have worn some costumes that are decidedly female, (Suzie Costello and the Cybelline priestess), but neither of them were really RP characters. I was just there to complete a set (in Suzie's case) or make a group cosplay skit look cool. If I'm actually going to be playing in character in significant ways, I connect much more strongly with the aforementioned guys.
3. While I am not an anti-social hermit, unless I have a very good reason to go out, I would almost always rather stay in. I live in the LA area, and the last time I went to a club was when I was an undergraduate. Also, my idea of "going to a bar" is driving out to the Robin Hood Pub in Sherman Oaks for a shandy and some fantastic English pub food.
4. I probably have more kinds of tea than I do pairs of shoes. Rae and I have two entire drawers devoted to our tea and tea-making supplies (scoop for loose leaf tea, various strainers, etc.), and that's not even counting the "communal" tea that belongs to the entire house. I drink at least two cups a day. One when I first get up, and another later on in the afternoon. (The first is usually my cheap but very delicious TJ's Irish breakfast tea. The second is one of my more expensive flavored teas, because by then, I'm awake enough to appreciate it.)
5. I did not drink more than the barest hint of alcohol before I was twenty years old. The first time I drank seriously, I was in Galway, Ireland, and even though I had more alcohol than I had ever had in my life (probably six or seven shots over the course of a couple of hours) I remembered all of the things that I learned about not making oneself sick and managed to be quite functional the next morning when we had to get on the bus for the tour we were going on that day. (I was in much better shape than the girl who had drunk six or seven shots in quick succession and showed the entire group of us her breasts. She complained about "stomach flu" and didn't even come downstairs.) Now, I drink occasionally, still try to remember how not to make myself sick, and have only felt anything approaching hangover symptoms once that I can remember.
6. I drive by myself a lot. I drive about forty miles to the school I teach at, and I drive three hours up to my parents house at least once every couple of months. If there is someone else with me in the car, we'll usually have music on. When I'm by myself, though, I tend to drive in silence. I didn't grow up with a radio in my car, and being alone in the quiet with my thoughts is something I value.
7. I have never bought a new piece of furniture (not counting bookshelves...). Every piece of furniture that I use regularly is a hand-me-down. The desk my computer sits on used to belong to the guy who gave me my first computer (a Commodore 64) back when I was in fifth grade. My filing cabinet was my mom's, the bed I sleep on was a friend's, my night stand was my grandmother's, and the couches and chairs in the living room used to belong to other friends or the people who lived here before us.
And to close, a fandom meme:
Give me a character from any fandom I know at least fairly well, and I will tell you:
A) My OTP
B) The runner up
C) The anti-ship
D) My unpopular fannish opinion on said character
E) One person he/she never fell in love with, and why
